Overall it was a pretty smooth experience. The settings I gleaned from the interwebs were almost dead on as far as exposure, f-stop, etc. I'd say the only real challenge during the evening part of the concert was quick and accurate focusing with dark conditions, fast action and stage lighting. If you're used to a more staged type of photography where you have time to compose and make everything just right then this is a huge difference! Everything happens in an instant.
Usually I'm not a fan of what some call "spray & pray", where you put the camera in hi drive continuous mode and just keep snapping pics, but concert photography might be one of the places it's useful. Capturing just the right facial expression or pose can be difficult to near impossible if composing single shots. With the size and low cost of memory cards these days it's easier just to shoot too much up front and edit in Lightroom. Once on the big screen the winners and losers become that much more obvious.
I look forward to more experiences like this one so I can continue to hone my photography skills.
